Breaking into your dream job and becoming successful in it takes planning with the harsh reality that there isn’t room at the top for everyone! Here are some tips I would like to share with you.
1.Figure out what the workplace can offer YOU
People tend to look at salaries as their main criteria when looking at jobs (or the reason they stay in their current position) but money should never be the main motivator. I think it’s better to look for the opportunities in a career that fits the life you see yourself living.
2.Plan your career
Successful careers require careful planning. Look at your future and establish where you would like to be ie: in five years’ time. Consider the additional jobs skills you will need, how you can achieve them and then develop an action plan.
3. Aim to Improve
Job applications, interviews and placements constantly repeat themselves as you move up the ladder. In your pursuit to get where you want to be, aim to always improve upon the last time. As your experience grows so will the expectations.
4.Take ownership of your CV
Employers may view CV’s as a good way of assessing an individual that they haven’t yet met, but for you it’s a snapshot of your working life. When you read it, are you impressed?? Your CV is your first chance to make an impression, it sells you and your skills, so make sure it’s formatted correctly.
5. Up-skill
Invest in further training. Not only will it boost your confidence in your job and improve your performance but with the job market becoming so competitive, it will increase opportunities and your chances of promotion.
6. Build your portfolio
Regardless of how long you have worked in the hair industry and even if you have no intentions to change your job, keep building and adding to your portfolio of work. Who knows when you may need it next. It allows your customers and potential employer to see your unique skills.
7.Be prepared for hard work
Sometimes we look at our role models in the industry and see only the end results of their success, the glamorous lifestyles and everything that goes along with it! We often underestimate the time and effort it takes to become successful and fail to see the hard work they have put in to get there. Hard work along with a positive mindset is probably the difference between those who progress and those who don’t.
8.Go for it!
Fear of failure will stop us becoming successful. Be brave and don’t be afraid to take risks. Conquer your fears and make things happen!
9. Enjoy the process
Quite often we only focus on end results and are often in a rush to get to the top. My advice is to enjoy the process, take your time and be proud of what you have accomplished so far!
